InnerLife :: Proposed Biofeedback Interface for Second Life

Wilddivine

I just came across the InnerLife project dedicated to introducing biofeedback into Second Life. Project leader Elizabeth Dalton (Nekokami Dragonfly in SL) caught the biofeedback bug from The Journey to Wild Divine, an "inner-active" computer game controlled by the variance of your heart rate and skin conductance.

Elizabeth explains why she started Inner Life:

"I enjoyed the Journey to Wild Divine so much, I started to be desperate for the sequel, but that seemed to be a long time out in the future. I also started to have ideas of my own about activities that could be included in a simlar game, and I could see from participating in the discussion boards at the Wild Divine site that many other people also had suggestions. I initially started working on a free-standing "event editor" using Runtime Revolution, that we could all have used to import graphics and music into to create events, but then I discovered Second Life. I became convinced that this would be a great place to develop tools that would allow anyone to create biofeedback events, which we could all share together. I've been trying to recruit people who share this vision ever since."

Interesting... I've tested Wild Divine only very briefly, but most of the reviews^I've^read say it really deserves to be called revolutionary and that the biofeedback interface works great. Actually, the most commonly reported hang-up is with Wild Divine's mystical aesthetic. But bringing the interface into SL would allow designers to strip away the New Agey look and experiment with whatever scenarios they want. It would be great to play the SL version of brainball! And in a massively multi-player setting you could harness entire teams of biofeedbackers for some truly wild experiments.

Elizabeth says she tried to enter InnerLife into the SL Game Developers' Competition but didn't make the cut. That seems a shame as this has to be more innovative than most other entrants (lack of popular feedback devices may have been the barrier), but she says she's determined to move forward anyway. Looks like there are some interesting folks helping her out, including Onyx Everett, an art student in London who's working on an SL Dream Recorder amongst other things. Be in touch with Elizabeth through the InnerLife Project Website if you're interested in where this could lead.

You know, both Second Life and Journey to Wild Divine demoed at Accelerating Change 2004, and I vaguely remember hearing about a woman running around looking for Lindens to ask if SL could hook up to the biofeedback controls. That wasn't you, Elizabeth, was it? :-)

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the nice review. I'd have answered your question more quickly if I'd known you were writing this. ;)

No, that wasn't me at the convention, though it nearly was. I met with some folks at Wild Divine last summer and there was talk about me going with them to the convention to try to connect with the Linden Labs folks, but things didn't work out that way. Perhaps if they had, we'd be further along now... or perhaps not. But I've heard that several Lindens did like our GDC proposal, which was encouraging, even if we didn't make the cut for the competition.

At this point our biggest obstacle is probably the inherent latency in the XML-RPC system we're using to bring Light Stone (Wild Divine biofeedback device) equipment into Second Life. It works, but we currently get one packet of data every 3-4 seconds, which isn't speedy enough for an immersive game. What we really need is high-speed support directly through the client, so we can get the same kind of response the mouse and keyboard get (i.e. sometimes, but not *always* laggy.) For those with SL accounts, go to the voting page and vote for Proposal 203 - Support local devices beyond mouse and keyboard! http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=203

Thank you! :)

Elizabeth/Nekokami Dragonfly

Hello,
Thanks for the article.
As one of the developers/collaborators it's nice to see come visibility - makes us feel not quite so fringy, even if we dabble in the mystical:-)

Speaking of which, some initial experiments with the SL bio interface are being used for interactive art performance in the event detailed below.

I hope it's not too "mystical aesthetic" for you, but considering I'll be in australia, streaming to the US server grid, which is streaming to holland, and collaborating real time in a live performance from the metaverse to the real world there is a certain amount of techno black magic/shamanism going on:-)

Thanks,
Paul Cohen

Mandala Bead Games - DreamTime Art Performance : RL + SL Synergy, Magic, Myth and Mystery eXPerience.

The multimedia artist and techno shaman Don Renaro takes us on a trip to his DreamTime Art Studio in SL. As Carlos Tapioca he performs his Magic Element Rituals to a Real Life + Second Life Audience. His work induces a state of Inner Silence, that feels like Dreaming Awake. The animations of his avatar and energy body or aura, are a wonderful eXPerience.

Guest performer : Paul Cohen / Komuso Tokugawa. The Australian audiovisual instrument builder/artist blows wonderful rainbow clouds in the air with his shakuhachi (bamboo flute). In his SonicViz Performance the sounds, colors and shapes depend on his bio signals, streaming realtime into Second Life.

We participate in the ArtTour 2005. See www.mandalaweb.net <http://www.mandalaweb.net> for info. The RL events are at Cinema Lumiere in Maastricht (Holland), on May 21 + 22. They take about 20 minutes and repeat every hour, starting at 1:00 + 2:00 + 3:00 + 4:00 + 5:00 PM GMT+1 (4:00 to 8:00 AM PDT in SL).

My pleasure about the write-up. About letting you know: just testing to see if word actually gets around on this whole internets thing :-) Thanks for posting more info and making the technical challenges of your project clear.

Paul, realizing you're being a little tongue-in-cheek here I must say that most people would consider this to be a technical system and not a mystical one, but I think you have just hatched an hysterical new hybrid character: Paul, The Mystical IT Guy! I can see it clearly and await the SNL or Conan O'Brian sketch :-P Thanks for posting the event here.

Good luck with your project! Without doubt there are lots of great applications for fun, research, and personal training/reflection (not to mention a new qualitative Dwell feature for SL, ha...). Just make sure you get those Wild Divine folks to support and/or fund you and use of their hardware. Their feedback devices (the lightstone and whatever they'll develop down the road) could become much, much more popular with endorsed Second Life developer communities adding new (and more diverse) bio-feedback content faster than they could ever release and market traditional stand-alone packages like Wild Divine. Please keep us updated on how this goes.

>>but I think you have just hatched an hysterical new hybrid character: Paul, The Mystical IT Guy

Lol. What can I say to that but:

The Tao that is seen
Is not the true Tao, until
SL V2.1

8-)

Event cancelled due to network failure...not enuff magic:-/
