"SpinMass Grid Chart is a .NET application I've developed for viewing interactive maps of the the Second Life grid(s). It displays the sims and their terrain in several styles which can be configured by the user. It includes a query mechanism and the ability to save the current map display. The sims are rendered from topographical data which is included with the application, but it also works in a simple schematic mode without terrain data.
He's also ripped the topography of the inworld Second Life Community Convention into 3D StudioMax for the full body treatment (immediately below). Also check out Cadroe's very brief 3D SL map movie for a little kick in the imagination mapping pants.
SpinMass goes right after two things that get me really, really excited: mapping virtual worlds the way that Google, Microsoft, Yahoo! and others are competing to map the real world, and ripping VW content into high-end 3D tools. When I think about a set of interoperable networks worthy of a new word like metaverse I'm always looking for the convergence of 1. video games/graphical interfaces, 2. high-end 3D creation tools/CAD, 3. social software/collaboration tools, 4. geo-spatial web/interactive mapping. We're planning a Future Salon with Cadroe and some others on the mapping side of things later this year.
Here are a couple of my own slides I've used when talking about convergence between "real world" online maps and SL maps (the top left pic made by Cadroe):
