Second Life Future Salon: First Real Product Buyable With Virtual World Currency

Update: MTV News has just posted a nice article on this that talks with SLB owner FlipperPA Peregrine/Tim Allen about his motivations and plans. Flipper mentions that "He's also hoping to sell an upcoming book, "Only a Game," which deals with the exploits of two journalists who report from within online worlds." Cool. I'll definitely pick up a copy of that with Lindens if it goes up on SLB.

Over at reBang Csven wonders what would have happened if they'd made their first non-virtual sale something striking and non tech, like a puppy :-). Great idea!

And over at MAKE a commenter says, "Next milestone: $ to $L exchange rate on Yahoo."

Last week we posted about SLBoutique's growth over 2005 and their plans to start selling real things for Second Life's virtual currency, the Linden. Whoomp there it is:

The first real product, an XFX GeForce graphics card, is selling for L$20,000 or about US$72 including sales tax and shipping (approx. $L275 = US$1). Makes sense, upgrade your system from work within the virtual world you're running. What next? MMOrgy has some not safe for work ideas. How about something simple that generates from the SL itself, like user-created t-shirts a la something like Threadless? What do you think would work? Gosh, virtual currency for virtual things is going to be sooooo passe soon ;).

Back on the virtual for virtual side, interesting looks at issues around gold farming and RMT (real money trade) in role-playing gamey MMOs at Terra Nova recently: Just Say No to gold farmer ads about PC Gamer magazine no longer accepting ads from IGE and How A Gold Farm Works, an insider look at how "mom-and-pop gold farmers" are being driven out of business by low-wage foregin competition and uber efficient operations. Almost feels quaint.

Note: Raymond Polonsky commented in our earlier post that he's in the process of launching his own business that will sell real things for SL Lindens, but beyond that we don't know much else of what he's up to with 2L Hosting.
