BTW, this experiment wasn't actually in SL, but rather in a more immersive "virtual reality room" so the title to your post is misleading.

The work so far on ostracism shows that you get similar psychological and physiological responses from people online and face to face, so I suppose this is possible. But honestly I'd really like to see the original study. A key part of the first Milgram experiments was that participants DIDN'T know the shocks were false. If you take that element out, the comparison seems suspect.
