On Philip's "Space Exploration" Post (#2: ALife Evolution)

[Continuing ...Post (#1: Inner Space)] Philip's entry goes on to suggest:

“If we think about where SL will go as processing power explodes (as it certainly will continue to do), things get really interesting. A digital simulation like SL can accurately model the basic ‘atoms’ with such acuity that eventually the emergent behaviors that arise from the complex interactions of these atoms will come to be identical to those that gave us life here on earth.”

And from there:

“Maybe one of the fun things to do in some future version of Second Life will be to ‘buy an island’ and then put a bunch of really complex little things into it, then intentionally allow no human contact with it for a period of time before lifting the curtains to go inside and see what built itself there."

I'd like to point out that Bruce Damer (Original Gangsta of Virtual Worlds and author of Avatars!) has a new distributed computing project called Darwin @ Home which is already looking to bark up this tree. (They're even cooking up an 'X-Prize for Artificial Life'...)

D@H platforms run distributed across a large pool of networked computers and interactive permitting people to play a role in shaping each digital biotic ecosystem.
