One of the post categories I'll create for this blog will be something like "Quotable Comments", or comments originally posted to other blogs that we'll pluck from the sea of words and convert into full-blown posts here with author credit.
First up, Peter S. Jenkins commenting on the Terra Nova thread about Sony's new Station Exchange player-to-player market for selling online gaming assets. Peter blasts the role-play protectionists who ideologically resist this real money market (the first of its kind to be sanctioned by a gaming company):
"Reminds me of the fall of the Soviet Union - sudden, unexpected and bloodless. What's next - freedom of speech? OMG! The thought of the ousted "magic circle" purists looking around for a new location to implement their ideology is somewhat amusing - they should follow Gorbie's example and realize the jig is up!"
Peter, I should point out, is famous for running over a Roomba vacuum with a Segway personal transporter at high speed. It happened in a hallway at last year's Accelerating Change conference and made it all the way to the Slashdot mainpage. Absolutely hysterical :-) Perhaps Peter can come and virtually recreate this geekbot mash-up (literally) at one of the SL Future Salons...

A three-dimensional virtual replica of the earth will end up being controlled by private corporations, which will attempt to treat virtual public spaces as corporate ones where freedom of speech is restricted, raising the company town issue in the article. (Microsoft and Google have already created these replicas for many of the major urban centres so the rest of the earth can't be far behind. Furthermore, I bet that it would be extremely difficult to take out an ad or otherwise express oneself in those spaces if the speech involved criticizing the applicable host company.)

The article is on the same topic as my currently in-progress PhD dissertation. I will be presenting and discussing the first chapter with other doctoral candidates from around the globe at the ATLAS Agora symposium at the London School of Economics in June and July this summer. I am very excited about participating in the LSE symposium and being able to absorb and explore some cutting edge ideas in the area of law and economics.

Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man?living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer and burn and scream until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you and he needs money.
