Google Buys Dodgeball :: Next Stop, Searchable Cities

Googleball_1Last night Google bought Dodgeball, a mobile social software and search platform with user communities in 22 cities. Obvious-sounding first moves would be integrating Dodgeball with Google Maps and Orkut.

Pre-Google Dodgeball was a really cool first-generation location-intelligence service but was limited by the size of its development team, lack of fast mapping software (most everything until recently was text-only), no GPS (location was entered manually—we'll have to see when this changes), and text-message-only input (fine, but it's nice to do your searching and lay out your plans from your PC before you leave the house). Google's involvement will definitely take the Dodgeball kernel light years from where it was. Very cool.

Around this topic, a couple of months back I posted "Wikipedia + Google Maps: Is WikiCity The Map of the Future?" which explores a wiki option for handling some of the growing mass of geographic annotations we can expect from services like Dodgeball + Google, and which also proposes posting stand-alone 3D virtual environments (ala the now defunct Adobe Atmosphere) to points on Google Maps. Similar kinds of thoughts on the "Skinnable World" over at Terra Nova here and here.

per our initial in-world conversation when i suggested mating interactive 3D to these Google maps ala ARQuake and the like, and as an extension of the PvP "RadTag" i designed last year which used a hybrid GPS/wireless position locating solution, here comes a nice add-on to fix some of the GPS issues i ran into: http://www.defensetech.org/archives/001545.html .

you'll still need to send the 3D data using something other than a GPS radio beacon satellites, but this radio chip should help align things. and i believe there's even a Slashdot post that alludes to using cell phones as part of the network (which is basically how i solved the issue with RadTag).

Thanks, csven. Here's a link to the RadTag design for anyone interested in your reference (psst...and I think he meant "P2P" not "PvP", which adds a totally different flavor to the concept ;-).

Last night I listened to Clay Shirky's talk, Phone as Platform on IT Conversations. He told a story about teaching a new class at NYU that was supposed to merge video game-inspired city-scale games with GPS on cell phones. Turns out there were too many technical difficulties with GPS in the city (including GPS not being specific enough in an area that dense with stuff). So they salvaged the class by making PacManhatten using regular ol' voice over cell phones to broadcast locations. This sounds like the kind of class that would be experimenting with the very new stuff you've mentioned. I actually had a chance to check out NYU's Interactive Telecommunications thesis exhibit a few nights back. Some interesting stuff. Write-up on Cool Hunting.

tbh, i'm kinda watching to see if one of the digital satellite radio services doesn't somehow get pulled into this (if they aren't already). can the GoogleSat be far behind?

Oooh! GoogleSat... I love it. Here's an April Fool's post from Slashdot on this topic: gSat. But this would make total sense, right? I know Keyhole (owned by Google), World Wind (NASA), and other satellite imaging services advance at the speed that the technologies involved power-up and drop in price, but I'm not really familiar with trends in satellite ability, numbers, cost, law, ownership, imaging, etc. Know any good resources that might clue us in on how this stuff is developing? I'd love to see the data-driven forecasts in this area.
