Sven Sets His Lunch Tray on the SL Future Salon Table

I'm backflip happy to welcome C. Sven Johnson (AKA Csven Concord in Second Life, avatar pictured left) as an author here on SLFS. His own blog, reBang, is a personal favorite and you may have caught him here once before with his post, "The Flat Earth's Shaky Virtual Ground".

So who is this dude? Sven is an independent, Connecticut-based product development consultant who holds both a BFA in Industrial Design from the Cleveland Institute of Art and a BSc in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Notre Dame. His personal interests gravitate toward the convergence of industrial design and virtual content creation with rapid-prototyping technologies, and the emergence of new business models from the resulting intersections of these disciplines.

And now, without further ado, please welcome Sven and look out for his periodic posts. Monsieur Sven, it will be very good to have you and your technically accomplished, well-reasoned, forward-looking contagiousness. Please make yourself at home. For me the real question is: even if I believe I'm holding a pipe in RL, am I? Simpler yet, who controls the definition of "pipe"? the creator or the user?

When I was a child living in Europe, my grandfather smoked a pipe not unlike the one pictured. Wishing to be more like him I asked and received my own "pipe". It was of course only a simple plastic toy.

One day while sitting on the floor next to his recliner I played intensely with my Leggo's while the toy pipe hung mindlessly from my mouth. Being the attentive sort, I didn't notice as my grandfather stuck his lit cigarette into my "toy" pipe. I'm not sure I've ever choked as hard since the day of that unwelcome surprise. But the real issue is that to me, that toy was not a toy at all; even if I understood that to be the case prior to this incident. Afterwards, regardless of what anyone else believed it to be - regardless of the manufacturing engineer who was careful to ensure it followed the industry rules for being a "toy" - in my mind it was a real pipe. Who's to argue with how I perceive the world?
