My new paper/Bartle

Today, on SSRN, I posted a draft of my new paper on simulation theory, entitled "The Simulagenic Universe". I am circulating it for comments prior to publication so any input would be welcome.

I am looking forward to the Salon with Richard Bartle. I had an excellent exchange with him on Terra Nova after my paper on freedom of speech in virtual worlds came out last year. We ended up debating how freedom of speech rights could be reconciled with a MMOG that was based on a POW or Gulag theme. Obviously, freedom of speech would not work there if someone took advantage of it to blurt out the escape plans to the jailers. (In a parallel universe, Richard was obviously Roger Bartlett Bartlett - lol!) Certainly, any ultra-realistic, non-comedic MMOG involving a prison camp or Gulag (Jack Balkin's example) may have to screen prospective players for psychological sensitivities or abnormalities prior to admitting them as players to avoid the problems associated with the Stanford prison experiment (referred to by Mike Sellers in a recent Terra Nova discussion). This screening would tend to make the world a members-only "gated community" rather than a company town, so freedom of speech would not apply. In terms of a comedic version, e.g. a MMOG based on the TV series, Hogan's Heroes, perhaps some fool blurting out the escape plans would enhance the humor!

Hi, Peter --

While I advocate freedom of expression in a non-roleplaying world like Second Life (by non-roleplaying, I mean that SL is not coded as a roleplaying world), I think the POW/Gulag environments you reference are suitable for limiting free speech. In a roleplaying environment, one would ideally only have as many free expression rights as permitted by their character and the world setting. Breaking character, ideally, is against the rules.

Setting expectations is key, and this is where I think Second Life could use some improvement. Your POW/Gulag game would have to communicate clearly to the participants what freedoms they are allowed to exercise.

Enforcement of the rules, is, of course, impossible, unless all participants are being "good sports." Creation of an "in-character" and "out of character" channel might alleviate the tendency of players to break character (staying in character can become emotionally-draining).

On the topic of screening for psychological sensitivities or abnormalities, I once had a discussion with a kid from northern Europe (I can't recall which country) who told me of a live-action roleplaying game he participated in that took place in an abandoned mental hospital over the course of several days. Some players took the role of patients and some hospital workers. He told me that the game was very hard one one's psyche -- some of the players became temporarily mentally distressed. I'm not sure you can screen for that kind of thing in advance.
