In a couple of hours I am hopping on an airplane bound for Budapest, Hungary to give a presentation at the World Futures Studies Federation 2005 conference. The title of my presentation is "Brave New Virtual Worlds" (title pic above), which will be an introduction the idea of the metaverse and mirror worlds using Second Life and Google Earth as developing examples. I'll post the slides and write-up once I get back to New York next Thursday. I'm including quite a bit about the Second Life Future Salons and presenter and participant projects, as well as the upcoming Second Life Relay for Life and Second Life Community Convention that will be co-locating with State of Play on October 9th at the New York Law School, so frequenters of the salon community will be very well represented :-)
At Accelerating Change 2005 this September 16-18 at Stanford I'll be giving a condensed version of Brave New Virtual Worlds as in intro to the late night Explorations session with Cory Ondrejka from Linden Lab, Jamais Cascio from WorldChanging, Joi Ito, and IMHO the world's most enlightening futurist, my super duper friend and colleague John Smart at the Acceleration Studies Foundation.
Gosh that sounds like a lot for this little guy... Wish me luck! I'll do my best to represent the awesome stuff we're all working on, Eastern European style.
The way I see it, virtual environments like "Second Life" and "There" are destined to fail because they try to imitate real life to closely. When I say fail, I don't mean that they will never attract users, just that they will never become the "next generation browsers" they aspire to be.
Popular communities on the internet follow a completely different set of rules to those of real life. Consider the following:
An online member of any popular community (on irc, newgroups, instant messaging, etc) does not correspond to a particular place at any given time; I can talk to more than one person at once, or be in more than one "place" at once. In fact, whether I have an avatar or not, I certainly do not have a visable reprisentation of where I am and what I am doing.
Being invisible is what the internet is all about, and it is how communities have evolved for this medium. That is impossible to ignore.
For a "virtual world" program to have any remarkable success, the users would need to have the same, god-like perspective of the environment that is given to users of the irc, or even just browsing the www.
I could list dozens of other very important differences between social groups in the real world and those online, but you get the point by now.
Anyway, the point I am trying to make is not to criticise Second Life, but to say that Google Earth is not going to become a platform for extended online communities (or a "next generation browser"). To me, GE remains nothing more than a fantastic tool for geographically reprisenting data and exploring our [i]own[/i] world through satellite imagery and data plots.
I don't like to sound so negative, I really only posted this because it is something I have given a lot of though to. I look forward to seeing the update post to this.
