Dear Lord! Two HUGE conference announcements. First, the Accelerating Change 2005 conference is happening in two weeks!
Because I *love* to curate these things, I'm having trouble picking only a few names from the 40+ speaker line-up to mention here. Ray Kurzweil, Vernor Vinge, Dileep George, Blake Ross, Beth Noveck, Joi Ito, George Gilder... It's a little diverse and overwhelming. Just go to the AC2005 homepage to see who, and the abstracts page to skim through the content. If you're all about exploring systemic technological, social, and planetary change, I'll go out on a limb and say you're really not going to find anything better than this anywhere else.
You can enter the $75 discount code "AC2005-SLFUTURESALON" (no quotes, all caps) on the registration page to register for $400 (students can register for $150 without a code). There are only 20-something of the 350 spaces left so please sign up now if you plan to come or you really may get spaced out :-(.
Of particular interest to the SL Future Salon community, AC2005 will feature a panel called "Building the Metaverse" with Second Life/Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale on Tipping the Metaverse and Croquet Project Architects David Smith and Julian Lombardi on The Social Dimension of Croquet (note: this month's SL Future Salon will be a time-shifted video screening of this panel in SL). There will also be a full-day, hands-on Second Life workshop for $100 called "Building the Dream: Creating and Profiting in Virtual Worlds" led by SL's VP of Product Development Cory Ondrejka and other Linden Lab staff. You don't have to come to the conference to do the workshop. Cory will also give a conference presentation called One Thing to Tell the World About Video Games.
Next up, the first ever Second Life Community Convention will happen this October 8-9 at the New York Law School and we need Second Lifers to spread the word, rally the troops, and register now!
We'll be co-locating with the State of Play conference on law and virtual worlds so it's possible to attend both events back-to-back for pretty much the coolest weekend of serious virtual worlds stuff ever. The SLCC kicks off as SoP ends on the evening of Saturday, October 8th with a welcoming reception and open bar at Off the Wagon in Manhattan's Greenwhich Village. The following day is packed with presentations and open space "SL Jam Sessions" where you'll meet face-to-face with SL residents, entrepreneurs, scholars of cyberspace, and Lindens to share experiences, network on projects, and discuss and create the future of the Second Life platform. Philip Rosedale/Linden will deliver the Keynote address.
A dedicated team of volunteers is putting this whole thing together as a labor of love so admission is set as low as possible at $95, including both the reception party and convention ($75 for just the convention). Hit the registration page for more info on what's included, and hopefully to sign-up and join us! If you're serious about Second Life and the emerging 3D Web (you know, that oncoming thing we're dubbing the Metaverse), please come and add your energy, ideas and perspective on where the whole operation is and should be going. IM FlipperPA Peregrine, Hiro Pendragon, or myself, SNOOPYbrown Zamboni, in SL with any questions, including inquiries about resident sponsorships of the event.
I'll see you at the SLCC! Now if I can just find someone to sponsor me for Accelerating Change... :D

Hey, still looking for a couple more slaves, er, volunteers who come to AC for free in exchange for back-breaking labor, er, light onsite work. Timothy Moenk/Lyre Calliope is doing that. You'd have to pay to ride the big metal bird that brings you there, though. That's the tough part. Hey, someone want to sponsor Jade's flight? Nike? Gatorade? Google? Anyone? :-)

Mmmm... Gatorade. ^_^
