Wow! This is the economic crux for the convergence of gaming technology. As soon as I became interested in Second Life a year or two ago, I immediately wondered why the gamers werent creating the world in which Grand Theft Auto exists. Why don't the users own the actual cars and buildings? This would create a reason to protect items inside of the game, items indeed worth real money. This trend will not only increase the volume of users among games but will significantly increase competition. Gaming may soon reflect the values and behaviors of real life systems even though we are virtually swapping out the gadgets and gizmos we are physically using.

I DO wonder how an open source gaming platform will take on intellectual property issues, as this category, in all spaces, never seems to find a stable pattern of function.

Another key component to look out for in this unstoppable economy is the ability for private owners to tweek the currency rate. If you look back to 1910 and the circumstances in which the Federal Reserve was created, you will clearly see the same possibility for monopoly here. I can see the Aldrichs and Warburgs of today's upcomign market and their decisions may be as crippling as those executed after that trip to Jekyl Island. Where there is an enabling technology for the masses, there is a private meeting among the elite.

That's a very interesting. Some would say that's a little paranoid, but the potential for such manipulation is huge. I suspect a few scams will pop-up, but that the larger battle to define evolving currency markets will be fought between the US, China, Europe, India, Brazil, and certain developing countries. Perhaps something very bottom-up and organic will evolve and take it all out of human hands?
