Second Life Future Salon with Michael Frumin and Csven Concord, Thursday, February 23rd

The next SL Future Salon is Thursday, February 23rd, with Michael Frumin from Eyebeam R&D in NY and C. Sven Johnson AKA Csven Concord in SL, author of the reBang blog and a contributor to Core77 and on occassion this very blog.

Michael is the one behind Eyebeam's OGLE project, which Sven has been testing out:

OGLE (i.e. OpenGLExtractor) is a software package by Eyebeam R&D that allows for the capture and re-use of 3D geometry data from 3D graphics applications running on Microsoft Windows. It works by observing the data flowing between 3D applications and the system's OpenGL library, and recording that data in a standard 3D file format. In other words, a 'screen grab' or 'view source' operation for 3D data.

So far 3D files have been moved from Second Life, World of Warcraft and Google Earth into Maya. I've visited Eyebeam several times in the last few weeks and Mike was cool enough to help me export my avatar into Maya and make a 3D print! I'm psyched because Mike has said the OGLE project was inspired by the Quake 3 rocket launcher that Csven and Jeff Gomez transferred into Second Life for an earlier salon (see here and here). I'll be posting more about Mike, Sven, and OGLE this weekend and next week, but mark your calendars because this system gets right to the heart of interoperability between different 3D worlds and software.

Love the Zamboni Action Figures! Free Trade of content in VWs is made possible! So when's the Eyebeam IPO? Believe it, it'll come sooner or later.

Awesome post. This info is big-time huge. Looks like the OGLE may well prove more important to the development of the broader Metaverse than SL itself, or any other individual virtual world. OGLE seems like an indirect ICT (Interactive Communication Technology) that has the potential to ease communication between all virtual worlds. What remains to be seen is how Linden Lab and other VW owners react. This software will allow users to rob "their" world of established value. But it will also allow a tremendous amount of value to be generated. My gut instinct is that VW's that do not allow for the Free Trade of information/value between one another will miss out on the broader benefits of a bottom-up Metaverse. Grow or die. By not allowing free trade of content, a VW is limiting growth.

Once OGLE is developed a bit futher and diffused, I can definitely see a lot of VW's, especially newbies like Multiverse, knowingly customizing their worlds for existence in an interstitched patchwork quilt of VW's that will probably turn into the Metaverse, because of the tremendous network of value that they will be joining. This drastically cuts down the amount of time necessary to create a rich virtual environment. Hopefully SL will embrace this, rather than apply the brakes. To fight against this transfer seems like a zero-sum game, whereas embracing free content trade between VW's looks like a super-positive-sum endeavor.

Very interesting times. Nice work Eyebeam! I salute you. Ogle is an elegant new technology that has the potential to do a lot of good.

One more thing: What do y'all think is the likelihood that Google will acquire both 1)SL/Linden Lab and 2) either OGLE or an OGLE-like application? 10%. 50%. 90% Personally, I think it's all up to Linden Lab.
