Glitchy Link - Internet of Objects

Bruce Sterling @ Etech

I think Bruce Sterling gave this same speech today @ SXSW (which I had the pleasure to spend the weekend at.) (UPDATE: Heard that Sterling's SXSW speech was different then @ Etech... Follow-up post when details come...)

I was sidekicking this Etech transcription around on my way down to Austin, and I think it speaks a lot to some of the services that SL, being first a virtual world,  could provide to truly integrate itself into REVL (real everyday life.)

Sterlings definition of his new neologism, Spimes.

"...manufactured objects whose informational support is so overwhelmingly extensive and rich that they are regarded as material instantiations of an immaterial system. Spimes begin and end as data.  They're virtual objects first and actual objects second." 

He's talking about the benefits, and the eventual ubiquity of RL tagging, (RFID, sensors, bar codes, etc.) These technologies are, right now,  a tough and expensive sell to the general public.  Although, obviously, becoming more and more integrated every day. (ex Verichip  & Wal-Mart)

However, being that SL is  already 100% linkable, rankable, and sortable,  it's seems to be  the perfect place to not only test out the usability/practicality of "spimes" but could lead the way into an "Internet of Objects." (Update: Is my naivete getting the best of me? Do my in-world web 2.0 dreams have to wait at least for html on a prim?)

Socialight lets you put virtual "sticky" notes called StickyShadows™ anywhere in the real world. Share pictures, notes and more using your cell phone. 

Definitely something I'm planning on trying out...

Another update: Raph Koster on Spimes & Second Life... "it strikes me that just as virtual spaces with user modeling are pretty good pre-visualizers, it's objects in a virtual world like Second Life that are really true spimes: 'fabbed,' in his sense, by being created just by specifying them; often higher in detail in the spec than can actually be rendered; networked and capable of intercommunication, tracking their own history, and so on; and even possibly transparent, in the event of the ability to copy some of the script code off of one.

And I'm saying that if he's saying that Web 2.0 is really Web 1.0, then Web 3.D is really Web 2.0, and should right now be talked about as the next step in online communication technologies.

I recall the Koster post.

Here's how I more or less view this:

a) program an object to be "aware"
b) create a representation of the virtual object
c) fab the object
d) expand awareness to the real object by d/l'ing the programming/AI
e) the virtual object becomes representational of the real*
f) the real goes through it's material lifecycle to the point where it prepares for a final power down
g) last data transmission to the virtual object at it's "death"
h) the virtual object continues on as part of the history, but also as part of the evolution; it's like DNA
i) new virtual object created from the previous data - 3D/programming/collected information/etc
j) continue cycle

If you recall the Make presentation, I brought up that someone needs to code an AI in SL and d/l that to one of those robot mice. That was part of this idea of connecting the two.

*Here's the interesting part: what if the virtual and real aren't doppelgangers in so much as they're more like twins separated by types of reality? One exists in the virtual and has a virtual lifecycle and one exists in the real with it's associated lifecycle. During this existence there is a continuous exchange of data. Extend "spime" to "dspime" - the ability to exist independently in both realities but evolve using information from each.
